Joshua Hemenway is a physical therapist originally from Richmond, Virginia. He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 2020 with a B.S. in Kinesiology & Health Sciences with a Minor in Public Health. From there, he attended Virginia Commonwealth University to earn his Doctorate of Physical Therapy. In his clinical experience thus far he has worked in outpatient, orthopedic-heavy settings similar to Professional Rehab Associates, though he looks forward to branching out into other specialties particularly as it pertains to vestibular and concussion populations. More about Joshua

What is your primary clinical interest/passion?

I primarily enjoy working with orthopedic conditions, especially those in our adult populations – “weekend warriors”, older adults who are striving to stay active and functional as they age, etc. I love when I am able to empower a patient in taking control of their physical health and their activities of daily living and/or recreational interests. I have a particular interest in getting everyone involved in strength training and reducing the stigma around lifting weights and squatting and hinging.

What do you enjoy about Professional Rehab Associates?

I enjoy the sense of community; not a day goes by that I don’t see a patient recognize another patient from their neighborhood or church. It’s rewarding to have glimpses of the patient and their lives & relationships that exist outside of their immediate clinical presentation.

Do you have further clinical plans for growth for you or the business?

My immediate plans are just to get up to speed with the clinic – how it operates, my day-to-day, etc. However, I would not be opposed to specializing in certain conditions / patient populations (e.g. concussion) in order to draw in and best serve a particular demographic. I also enjoy patient education and fostering self-efficacy, which could take the form of creating some sort of patient resources (e.g. blog posts) or other written media.

What experience do you have? (i.e., years, training, focus, certification)

I have a couple of clinical experiences through school (VCU Hospital, Alliance Physical Therapy in Richmond) but the biggest is the clinical rotation + year of work with Tidewater Physicians Multispecialty Group in Newport News, which is an outpatient clinic similar to PRA. In that setting, I primarily worked with active and older adults with primarily orthopedic concerns.

What are your hobbies and outside interests?

Outside of work and keeping up to date on physical therapy, I am an avid powerlifter – that’s probably my biggest hobby. Otherwise I enjoy learning about mixology / cocktails and finding new local places to go out to eat; I’ve recently been getting into cheese as well – none of these have been great for our budget. I am a huge fan of the Buffalo Bills and keep up pretty closely with the NFL as a whole. I used to be a concert flautist and briefly considered majoring in music for my undergraduate studies; though I’ve stopped playing for now, I maintain a very keen interest in music and music criticism.
